NUJ Adamawa Reaffirms Commitment to Professional Ethics, Unity at State Congress

The Adamawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed the need for unity and strict adherence to professional ethics among journalists, stressing that mutual respect and responsible reporting remain essential to strengthening the credibility of the profession in the state.

The position was reached during the union’s congress held at the NUJ Press Centre, Yola, and presided over by State Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim.

The congress reviewed ongoing issues affecting members and the journalism profession, including progress on the NLC/NUJ housing and land acquisition schemes.

Members urged continued compliance with payment obligations while mandating the council leadership to engage relevant authorities on challenges relating to deductions and proper documentation of land allocations.

It also expressed concern over the expiration of tenure for some chapel executives, directing affected chapels to formally notify the state council for appropriate constitutional action.

The meeting further lamented the low participation in the ongoing biometric registration exercise, urging members to complete the process without delay in their own interest and that of the union.

On governance and public service delivery, the congress called on the Adamawa State Government to appoint qualified information professionals to head communication-related institutions, saying such appointments would enhance efficiency and strengthen public information management.

Members also called for intensified public sensitisation on flood preparedness, particularly in vulnerable communities, noting the recurring threat of flooding in parts of the state. They further appealed for greater inclusion of journalists in political appointments, citing their role in democratic development, public enlightenment, and nation-building.

On agriculture, delegates urged the timely distribution of subsidised farm inputs to boost productivity and strengthen food security, while expressing concern over the state of firefighting and emergency response services. They called for urgent government intervention to improve the operational capacity of relevant agencies to safeguard lives and property.

Reaffirming its commitment, the congress pledged continued dedication to the advancement of journalism, protection of press freedom, and improved welfare for members.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the drafting committee chaired by Mohammed Saidu, with Sakina Ahmed as member and Jonathan Filibus as secretary, and was formally endorsed by State Chairman Ibrahim Abdullahi and State Secretary Kissinger Bukar.
